F1, which starred Brad Pitt and was very successful last year, is officially preparing to create a sequel. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer announced this to BBC. The movie is co-produced by Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, and has also received four Oscar nominations this year, including Best Picture. He mentioned to BBC during the Academy Awards luncheon in Los Angeles, "We're working on a sequel. " However, the producer did not share more information about the actors or when the project will be finished. He also did not provide details about whether Brad Pitt will return to his role, although Bruckheimer indicated he would be involved in the casting process.
There has been a lot of talk about the F1 sequel for a while, but this is the first official word on it. At the Apple TV Press Day last week, an audience member asked about the possibility of an F1 sequel. Apple’s senior executive Eddie Cue read the question, and Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali encouraged fans to "stay tuned. "
In a previous interview, F1 director Joseph Kosinski shared that he had first suggested the idea of Ford Vs Ferrari with Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise as the main actors. However, the project was not made due to budget complications. James Mangold later directed Ford Vs Ferrari with Christian Bale and Matt Damon. Pitt explained to The National that there was another reason he was not in the lead for Ford Vs Ferrari. "Tom and I had considered Ford Vs Ferrari with Joe [as the director] for a time. This was around ten years before the actual film was made, which was excellent," Pitt shared. He continued, "In the end, we both wanted to drive, and [Tom] wanted to play Shelby, while I wanted to portray Ken Miles. When Tom realized that Carroll Shelby wouldn’t be driving much in the film, it didn't happen. So I’m not sure how that will play out in a potential F1 sequel, but we will try. I would love to," as reported by Variety.
F1 is directed by Joseph Kosinski, known for directing Top Gun: Maverick. The racing drama also features Damson Idris, Javier Bardem, and Kerry McKenna in key roles. It was released in theaters on June 27, 2025.
