A government attorney in Florida, Mary Thomas, an Indian-American, will run for the US Congressional elections in November 2016. Thomas would become the first Indian-American woman lawmaker to be to be elected to the US Congress, if she wins.
In 1972, Thomas’ parents, Tom and Annie Thomas, left from India to migrate to America. She is now 37 years old. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Thomas is pitted against incumbent Gwen Graham of the Democratic Party.
During the campaign announcement in Florida, Mary Thomas said, "I'm a conservative Republican, a Christian, a wife, mother, and a lawyer. If elected, I would be the first Indian- American woman ever elected to Congress. This would truly be a historic event.”
"My family story is a shining example of the American dream," she said.
According to Tallahassee Democrat, Thomas told the local media that, "Illegal immigration is deeply personal to me and my family. My parents came to this country legally.”

The Indian-American attorney, Mary Thomas, is a general counsel for the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and is planning to resign for full time campaigning. She graduated from the Florida State University College of Law, got a Masters of Law from the University of Miami and a Bachelors degree from the University of South Florida.
