Irma Destroyed Quarter Of All Florida Keys Houses

Hurricane Irma destroyed a quarter of homes on the Florida keys. Evacuees began returning to the storm-ravaged islands of Key Largo, Tavernier and Islamorada only to find their homes ripped apart and businesses covered in Seaweed.

The death toll because of Irma are more than five dozen, and this storm is considered as most powerful Atlantic Storms on record and it is second major hurricane that hit US mainland in this season.

Of those deaths 43 were killed in Caribbean and at least 18 in the southeastern states. Federal Management Agency administrator Brock Long said preliminary estimates suggested 25 per cent of the homes in keys were destroyed and 65 percent with major damage.

"Basically, every house in the Keys was impacted," he said. Although keys area is studded with mansions and beach resorts, about 13 percent of its population leaves in poverty they will face further hardships as the cleanup’s begin.

"People who bag your groceries when you're on vacation — the bus drivers, hotel cleaners, cooks and dishwashers — they're already living beyond paycheck to paycheck," said Stephanie Kaple, who runs an organization helping the homeless in the Keys.

It will take 10 days to get fully restored with power, said officials. And around 905 million people are suffering this hot weather without power. About 110,000 people remained in shelters across the state.
