1 killed, 9 injured in shooting in New Orleans' French Quarter

A person was gunned down and nine others were injured in a shooting in French Quarter of the southern US city of New Orleans, police said.

According to the Police Superintendent Michael Harrison, some 30 officers rushed to the scene  about 1:30 a.m. Sunday to the shooting at the intersection of Iberville and Bourbon streets

Harrison said in a news conference that, the shooting victims ages ranged from 20 to 37. It includes two females and eight males. One male victim died at a hospital.

The Fox 8 reported, the historical place was crowded due to the Thanksgiving holiday and Bayou Classic football match between Southern and Grambling universities in the Superdome.

"This was not the place or time to bring firearms to the Bayou Classic or any event. This is not the place where something like this should happen," Harrison said.

Glean Williams, who was selling hats and other items at a table a block away from the shooting, said that, "It was panic." "Everybody started running. People getting run over, stepped on, knocked over."

Mayor Mitch Landrieu said in a statement, "It's totally unacceptable." "I mean, the violence just continues to spin out of control with people brandishing weapons whenever they think they can,"  Landrieu said.
